MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE HANDLING OF LORRIES IN EXTREME SITUATIONS OF BRAKING

THIS PUBLICATION TREATS THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF ARTICULATED LORRIES WITH FOUR AXLES WHEN BRAKING ON A STRAIGHT COURSE AND WHEN TRAVELLING AROUND A BEND. THE BASIS FOR THE CALCULATIONS WAS A NON-LINEAR VEHICLE MODEL WHICH DESCRIBES THE HORIZONTAL MOTION OF THE VEHICLE, SWAYING, WHEEL ROTATION AND THE TYRE FORCES. THE INVESTIGATION WAS TO RESEARCH INTO THE INSTABILITIES WHICH ARE CAUSED IN EXTREME CONDITIONS OF BRAKING ON A SLIPPERY ROAD. IN ORDER TO SHOW THE INFLUENCE OF DRIVING ON A ROAD WITH BENDS ON THESE DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE BEHAVIOUR OF BRAKING ON THE STRAIGHT WAS SHOWN FIRST OF ALL, WHICH WAS SIGNIFIED BY FRONT WHEEL LOCKING OF TRACTOR AND TRAILER. WHEN BRAKING IN A BEND THE INFLUENCE OF TRANSVERSE ACCELERATION IS SUPERIMPOSED. THE TRAILER OF THE LADEN LORRY JACK-KNIFED AT THE FRONT AXLE WHILST THE HALF-LADEN TRAILER SKIDDED IN THE DIRECTION OF THE OUTSIDE OF THE BEND.
