THE PROCESS OF TRANSFORMING URBAN CENTRES INTO CITIES

EL PROCESO DE TRANSFORMACION DE LOS CENTROS URBANOS EN CIUDADES

A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE STAGES IN THE HISTORY OF THE RELATION BETWEEN URBAN TRANSPORT AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT. TRAFFIC GROWTH LEADS TO THE MODIFICATION OF TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT POLICIES IN TOWNS AND TO THE ADOPTION OF ACCESSIBILITY, SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION AND RESOURCE CONSERVATION POLICIES. THE CONSEQUENCES OF DECENTRALIZATION AND URBAN GROWTH, E.G. INCREASES IN TRANSPORT COSTS AND CHANGES IN LAND USE, ARE EXAMINED. GOTHENBURG AND BOLOGNA ARE USED AS EXAMPLES TO SHOW THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING. MENTION IS MADE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF REVITALIZING TOWN CENTRES DOWNGRADED BY RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED ON VEHICULAR TRAFFIC.
