THE SPECTROSCOPIC CHARACTERISATION OF MATERIALS CONTAINING BITUMEN

SPECTROSCOPIC INVESTIGATIONS HAVE AIDED FOR A LONG TIME THE CLARIFICATION OF THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF BITUMEN. IN THE INTERIM THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECTROSCOPY HAS ADVANCED AND CURRENTLY EMBRACES THE ULTRAVIOLET-, INFRA RED-NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE - AND MASS-SPECTROSCOPY AND X-RAY DIFFRACTION. WHILST THE UV-SPECTRUM DOES NOT PRODUCE A WELL DEFINED ABSORBTION CURVE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE BITUMEN IN THE MIXES USED, THE IR SPECTROSCOPIC CHARACTERISATION PERMITS QUALITATIVE INFORMATION ON THE AVAILABLE CHEMICAL STRUCTURES. NUCLEAR RESONANCE-SPECTROSCOPY IS PREFERRED FOR A QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SPECTRUMS. GOOD RESULTS CAN BE OBTAINED WITH THE ELECTRONIC ACCUMULATION METHOD FOR COMPLICATED ORGANIC MIXES. FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE METHOD FOR THE CHARACTERISATION OF BITUMEN, DATA ABOUT THE EXISTING MOLE MEASUREMENTS RANGES AND THEIR DISTRIBUTION EMERGE AS THE SIGNIFICANT RESULTS. THE X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS PROVIDES PROOF OF THE CRYSTALLINITY AND FOR THE CLARIFICATION OF QUESTIONS ON STRUCTURE RELATED TO THIS.
