NOISE PROTECTION ELEMENTS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

FOLLOWING THE RECOMMENDATION THAT FOR ECONOMIC REASONS BASICALLY, ONLY VEHICLES WITH LOW NOISE EMISSION ARE TO BE BUILT, AND THE DIRECTIVE THAT A LARGE PROPORTION OF NOISE POLLUTION COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY THOUGHTFUL TOWN PLANNING, RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE TO COMPENSATE FOR THIS LACK OF PLANNING AND TO PROVIDE NOISE FREE SPACES IN DENSELY POPULATED AREAS. THE BASIC LAWS OF ACOUSTICS ARE VERY CLEARLY SHOWN IN ELEVEN ILLUSTRATIONS WITH DESCRIPTIONS. ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT IN THIS RESPECT IS THE PROTECTIVE VALUE OF FIXED OBSTACLES. THEIR ASSESSMENT AS A FUNCTION OF THE EFFECTIVE PROTECTION HEIGHT OF THE OBSTRUCTIONS AND THEIR LOCATION WITH RESPECT TO THE NOISE SOURCE AND NOISE RECEIVER ARE GIVEN IN FORMULAE. BASED ON THESE NATURAL LAWS, PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION MEASURES ARE SUGGESTED AND JUSTIFIED IN DETAIL. FINALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS OF TECHNICALLY OPTIMUM NOISE PROTECTION FROM TRAFFIC NOISE ARE SHOWN. BY MAINTAINING PROTECTION DISTANCE ONLY SMALL NOISE LEVEL REDUCTIONS CAN BE EXPECTED. NOISE LEVEL REDUCTIONS ARE INCREASED BY GROWING VEGETATION IN FREE AREAS AND ON EMBANKMENT SLOPES. OBSTRUCTIONS BETWEEN NOISE SOURCE AND NOISE RECEIVER ARE MORE EFFECTIVE. THESE ARE TO BE SET OUT SUCH THAT THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE VALUE IS ACHIEVED. THE SIDE OF THE OBSTRUCTION FACING THE NOISE SOURCE SHOULD BE COVERED WITH ABSORBENT MATERIAL (OR PLANTS) AND/OR BE SLOPED. GAPS IN THE PROTECTION SYSTEM SHOULD BE AVOIDED.
