THE VALUE OF THE ROAD NETWORK IN HAMBURG IN 1968 WAS APPROX 2 THOUSAND MILLION DM AND TODAY IT IS APPROX 3 THOUSAND MILLION DM. BASIC MAINTENANCE IS AN URGENT TECHNICAL PROBLEM. THE CONCEPT OF MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR ARE DESCRIBED. THE DISTRIBUTION OF AVAILABLE FINANCE NECESSITATES REGISTRATION OF THE ROAD NETWORK AND ITS CONDITION. THE FIVE-YEAR INVENTORIES HAVE BEEN AMENDED SINCE 1966 USING DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT. THE TOTAL ROAD LENGTH IS 3900 KM AND THE ROAD SURFACES OCCUPY 2600 HECTARES OR 3.5 PERCENT OF THE SURFACE AREA OF THE DISTRICT COVERED BY THE FREE AND HANSEATIC CITY OF HAMBURG. THE ROUTE DATA PROCESSING METHODS PRODUCE BASIC INFORMATION ON THE URGENCY OF REPAIR WORKS AND THE REQUIREMENT LIES AT PRESENT AT 74 MILLION DM PER YEAR. IN 1978 ONLY 43 MILLION DM WERE AVAILABLE.
