EMPIRICAL RELATION BETWEEN SPEED PROFILES AND CROSS-SECTION RELATED SPEED DISTRIBUTION OF VEHICLES ON HIGHWAYS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC

EMPIRISCHER ZUSAMMENHANG ZWISCHEN GESCHWINDIGKEITSPROFILEN UND QUERSCHNITTSBEZOGENEN GESCHWINDIGKEITSVERTEILUNGEN VON FAHRZEUGKOLLEKTIVEN AUF LANDSTRASSEN MIT GEGENVERKEHR

AS PART OF A RESEARCH CONTRACT OF THE BMV THE RELATION BETWEEN LOCALLY MEASURED SPEEDS AND SIMULTANEOUSLY MEASURED SPEED PROFILES IS INVESTIGATED IN ORDER TO DESCRIBE THE TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR OF PRIVATE VEHICLES OVER LONGER ROAD SECTIONS. THE TEST JOURNEYS FOR OBTAINING SPEED PROFILES OF HIGHWAYS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC ARE CARRIED OUT ON A FEDERAL HIGHWAY WITH FAST MOVING TRAFFIC AND A MODERATELY WINDING HIGHWAY. THREE DIFFERENT TEST VEHICLES ARE USED WHICH ARE DRIVEN BY THREE DRIVERS AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND REPRESENT THE THREE CLASSES OF PRIVATE VEHICLES DERIVED IN THE FIRST PART OF THE DOCUMENT. IN THE SECOND PART THE SPEED BEHAVIOUR OF THE VEHICLES IS INVESTIGATED AND A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE STATISTICAL CHARACTERISTIC VALUES OF VARIOUS SPEED PROFILES THROUGH ROAD BENDS, THEIR MEAN SQUARE DEVIATION AND THEIR COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION. FROM A SPECIFIC TRAFFIC SAMPLE, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE PROPORTION OF DRIVERS AND VEHICLES WITH RESPECT TO THE TOTAL TRAFFIC, THE RELATION BETWEEN SPEED PROFILE AND PERCENTILE OF LOCAL SPEED DISTRIBUTION IS OBTAINED. IN THE THIRD PART, THE SPEED PROFILES ARE SIMULATED ON THE BASIS OF THE MECHANICS OF DRIVING, WITH THE AIM OF CONSTRUCTING THE EXPECTED SPEED BEHAVIOUR FOR PROJECTED ROADS.
