THE INFLUENCE OF ROAD SURFACING ON THE ROLLING NOISE OF PRIVATE CARS

THE NOISE DEVELOPED BY PRIVATE CARS WHEN RUNNING OVER CONCRETE ROAD SURFACES IMPROVED, IN TERMS OF SKID RESISTANCE, BY THE CUTTING OF WATER-REMOVING GROOVES, IS INVESTIGATED AND COMPARED TO NOISE FROM UNGROOVED CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES, INCLUDING THOSE IN TUNNELS AND TO ASPHALT SURFACES. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE OF EXTERNAL NOISE (PASSING NOISE ACCORDING TO ISO R 362) AND INTERNAL NOISE (IN THE VEHICLE, CENTRE OF PASSENGER AREA). FOR THE TUNNEL MEASUREMENTS, ONLY THE INTERNAL LEVELS WERE TAKEN. THE TEST VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH ROAD-TREAD TYRES AND ALSO WITH WINTER TREAD TYRES, BOTH OF RADIAL PLY; ONLY THE ROAD-TREAD TYRES WERE USED IN THE TUNNEL TESTS. THE MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN AT SPEEDS OF 80, 100 AND 120 KM/H AND IN THE TUNNEL AT 80 AND 100 KM/H. THE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES CONSISTED OF AN UNUSED CONCRETE SURFACE GROOVED TRANSVERSELY AT INTERVALS OF 2.5 CM AND FOUR OTHER SURFACES OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES: UNUSED CONCRETE, UNJOINTED CONCRETE 15 YEARS OLD, ASPHALT 1 YEAR OLD AND A NEW SURFACE DRESSING WITH 10/16 CHIPPINGS, AND IN THE TUNNEL CONCRETE WAS COMPARED TO AN ASPHALT SURFACE. THE MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE IN BOTH DRY AND WET CONDITIONS, BUT ONLY DRY IN THE TUNNEL. THE ROLLING NOISE WAS RECORDED, WITH THE EXCLUSION OF AMBIENT INFLUENCES, WITHOUT MOTIVE POWER (WITHOUT ENGINE NOISE). ON DRY ROADS THE INTENSITY OF THE ROLLING NOISE IS GENERALLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE 3RD OR 4TH POWER OF THE ROLLING SPEED, ON WET ROADS PROPORTIONAL TO THE 2ND OR 3RD POWER. THE NOISE PRODUCED ON THE COMPARATIVE SURFACES HAD ABOUT THE SAME INTENSITY, WHILST FOR THE TRANSVERSE GROOVED CONCRETE IT WAS UP TO 7 DB(A) HIGHER. ON WET ROADS IT WAS GENERALLY HIGHER, WITH THAT FOR THE TRANSVERSE GROOVED CONCRETE NEVERTHELESS AVERAGING 1 TO 2 DB(A) HIGHER THAN FOR COMPARABLE SURFACES. THE FREQUENCY SPECTRA AND TOTAL NOISE WAS INVESTIGATED. THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYRE PROFILE SHOWED ITSELF IN A DIFFERENCE IN THE TOTAL NOISE LEVELS OF 2 DB(A) MAXIMUM TO BE UNFAVOURABLE TOWARDS THE WINTER TYRES. FROM THE RESULTS OF A NARROW BAND ANALYSIS IT WAS DEDUCED THAT THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYRE PROFILE UPON NOISE EMISSION IS GREATER WHEN THE SURFACE TEXTURE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY IS FINE AND PROPORTIONAL TO THE DEPTH OF THE TREAD. IN THE CASE OF THE INTERIOR NOISE READINGS WHEN TRAVELLING THROUGH THE TUNNEL IT WAS FOUND THAT NO APPRECIABLE DIFFERENCE OF NOISE LEVEL WITHIN THE VEHICLE COULD BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE TWO COMPARATIVE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES OF CONCRETE AND ASPHALT.
