REINFORCED EARTH AS A RETAINING STRUCTURE

"BEWEHRTE ERDE" ALS STUETZKONSTRUKTION

THE PROCESS KNOWN AS "REINFORCED EARTH" WAS DEVELOPED IN FRANCE FOR THE BUILDING OF RETAINING WALLS AND SINCE 1977 ITS USE HAS ALSO BEEN PERMITTED IN THE GERMAN ROAD CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND BY THE FEDERAL GERMAN RAILWAYS. HOT DIPPED GALVANISED REINFORCEMENT STRIPS, 40 TO 100 MM WIDE AND 3 TO 5 MM THICK ARE LAID IN COURSES ON THE FILL MATERIAL, AND THESE TAKE-UP THE TENSILE STRESS, PASSING IT BY FRICTIONAL FORCES TO THE EARTH FILL. THE OUTER SKIN IS FORMED OF CRUCIFORM PRECAST CONCRETE UNITS, SOME 1 TONNE IN WEIGHT, 22 CM THICK, AND THE REINFORCING STRIPS ARE FIXED TO METAL TONGUES PROJECTING FROM THE REAR OF THE UNITS. DETAILS CONCERNING THE FOUNDATIONS AND THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS IN PLACING THE 35 TO 40 CM HIGH SECTIONS ARE PROVIDED AND ALSO INFORMATION CONCERNING THE STABILITY OF THE STRUCTURE. THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE CONCRETE PANELS MAKES THEM INDIFFERENT TO DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THE PH VALUE OF THE FILL MATERIAL IS BETWEEN 6 AND 10 AND THAT THE SPECIFIC RESISTANCE OF THE EARTH IS OVER 5000 OHM X CM, AS OTHERWISE THE GALVANISED REINFORCEMENT IS LIABLE TO CORROSION. SEVERAL WEST GERMAN STRUCTURES ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH SECTIONS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, INCLUDING ALSO SOME NOISE PROTECTION WALLS. THERE FINALLY FOLLOW SOME REMARKS UPON THE ECONOMICS OF THE "REINFORCED EARTH" PROCESS IN COMPARISON TO CONCRETE RETAINING WALLS, PARTICULARLY WHERE THE BEARING VALUE OF THE SUB-SOIL IS LOW.
