TRAFFIC RESTRAINTS IN SCANDINAVIA

VERKEHRSSANIERUNG IN SKANDINAVIEN

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE WITH RESIDENTIAL AREAS IN THE NETHERLANDS CANNOT EASILY BE EXTENDED TO ENCOMPASS THE OLDER PART OF TOWN CENTRES. IN ORDER TO GAIN EXPERIENCE FOR APPLICATION IN THE CITY OF HAMBURG, A STUDY TOUR WAS ORGANISED IN SEPTEMBER 1977 TO SCANDINAVIA. THE REPORT ON THIS TOUR COVERS EXPERIENCE FROM THE CITIES OF COPENHAGEN, AARHUS, STOCKHOLM, GOETENBERG, UPPSALA, HELSINKI AND OSLO. LESSONS HAVE BEEN DRAWN FROM THIS STUDY FOR USE IN FURTHER WORK IN HAMBURG. FULLY TREATED HERE ARE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE LAYOUT OF TRAFFIC SEGREGATED ZONES, THE LEGAL BASES, THE ORGANISATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MEASURES AND THEIR IMPLEMENTATION. THE DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLES IS COVERED UNDER THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS: REDUCTION IN ACCIDENT FREQUENCY, PREVENTION OF PARKING BY OUTSIDERS AND AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE LIVING ENVIRONMENT. RESIDENTIAL STREETS ON THE DELFT MODEL ARE GENERALLY UNKNOWN IN SCANDINAVIA.
