A TECHNIQUE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF A DRIVER AT A LEVEL CROSSING

OF A TOTAL OF 14784 HIGHWAY FATALITIES, 91 OCCUR AT LEVEL CROSSINGS. THE ACCIDENT FREQUENCY IS GREATEST AT FLASHING LIGHT CROSSINGS WITHOUT BARRIERS. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THESE ACCIDENTS THE DRIVING BEHAVIOUR OF DRIVERS APPROACHING LEVEL CROSSINGS MUST BE ACCURATELY KNOWN. AN IMPROVED MEASUREMENT METHOD WAS DEVELOPED, WITH WHICH THE RELEVANT DATA REGARDING THE VEHICLE AT A LEVEL CROSSING CAN BE OBTAINED AUTOMATICALLY AND CONTINUOUSLY. THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE TECHNIQUE IS THE SPEED MEASUREMENT DEVICE, A DOUBLE-RADAR SYSTEM (35.8 GHZ) PRODUCED BY THE AEG-TELEFUNKEN FIRM. THE ADDITIONAL ELECTRONIC UNITS ARE SPECIALLY DEVELOPED. ON THE BASIS OF 5000 MEASUREMENTS THE METHOD WAS TESTED. THE USE OF THE METHOD FOR SIMILAR SPEED PROBLEMS IS POSSIBLE.
