IMPROVING THE SKID RESISTANCE OF EXISTING BITUMINOUS WEARING SURFACES

AIDED BY THE HIGHWAY AUTHORITIES OF BADEN-WURTTEMBERG, HESSE, LOWER SAXONY AND WEST BERLIN, EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT USING VARIOUS METHODS TO IMPROVE SKID RESISTANCE HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN ON SIX LENGTHS OF NEWLY LAID HOT ROLLED ASPHALT. IT IS LINKED TO THE FACT THAT REDUCED SKID RESISTANCE IS CAUSED BY CONCENTRATIONS ON THE NEWLY LAID SURFACE OF BITUMINOUS MORTARS HAVING A LOW DEGREE OF SHARPNESS (BASICALLY FORMED ONLY OF BITUMEN AND ROCK FILLER). AS A RESULT OF REPEATED SKID RESISTANCE READINGS WITH THE LOCKED WHEEL DEVICE, THE EFFECTIVENESS AND PERMANENCE OF THE TREATMENT CAN BE EVALUATED. RECOMMENDED PROCESSES FROM THE EXPERIMENTS ARE THOSE USING SPECIAL MECHANICAL SCABBLERS, THE "TURPENTINE REPLACEMENT AND CRUSHED STONE MATERIAL" AND THE PROCESS USING A REGULAR SCATTERING OF CRUSHED ROCK CHIPPINGS, HEATING THE UPPER SURFACE OF THE WEARING COURSE WITH INFRA-RED HEATING UNITS AND ROLLING IN THE CHIPPINGS. TOGETHER WITH AN EVALUATION OF THE STATE OF INTERNATIONAL PRACTICE IN THIS MATTER, THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH WORK OFFER A BASIS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TREATMENT TO IMPROVE THE SKID RESISTANCE OF EXISTING BITUMINOUS WEARING SURFACES.
