STABILIZATION OF LOOSE STONE AND ROCK SLOPES WITH VEGETATION

VEGETATIVE STABILISIERUNG VON BOESCHUNGEN IN LOCKERGESTEIN UND FELS

THE TERM "VEGETATIVE STABILIZATION" MEANS THE CONSOLIDATION OF SLOPES USING LIVE PLANTS OR PLANT-PARTS WHICH, DUE TO THEIR INNATE STRUCTURE, ARE ABLE TO ABSORB MECHANICAL FORCES (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "PLANTING" GENERALLY, WHOSE PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE BARE EARTH WITH A COVER OF VEGETATION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE). THE AUTHOR PROVIDES THE ENGINEER WITH EXAMPLES (STRENGTH OF ROOTS; UNDERGROUND SPROUTING (ROOT GROWTH) OF STABILIZING VEGETATION; THE ABILITY, IN MECHANICALLY UNFAVOURABLE SITUATIONS, TO SEND ROOT-FRAMEWORKS UPWARDS), TO GIVE A DEFINITE INSIGHT INTO THE METHODS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR ENGINEERING-BIOLOGICAL SLOPE STABILIZATION BY THE INTRODUCTION OF AREAS OF BUSHES WITH VARYING STABILIZING DEPTHS AND BY CARNIOLAN WALLS; IN THE APPLICATION OF THIS OLD PRINCIPLE TIMBER IS BEING REPLACED BY PRE-CAST CONCRETE UNITS TO AN INCREASING DEGREE.
