SUSPENSION AND VIBRATION IN AMBULANCES

THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP AN AMBULANCE WHICH FULFILS MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS LOW VIBRATION OF PATIENT AND ACCOMPANYING PERSONNEL AND HAS SUFFICIENT SPACE INSIDE. THE EMPHASIS OF THE REPORT IS ON VERTICAL DYNAMICS. THE BEST POSITION FOR THE PATIENT IS BETWEEN THE AXLES, AND FOR THIS IT IS NECESSARY FOR THE REAR AXLE OF THE VEHICLE TO BE SET RELATIVELY FAR BACK. LOW VIBRATION LOADING CAN MOREOVER ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY A VERY SOFT SUSPENSION. HOWEVER, VERY SOFT SUSPENSIONS REQUIRE STRUCTURAL MEASURES TO COMBAT THE DISADVANTAGES OF DECREASED HANDLING, FOR EXAMPLE LOW FOCAL POINT OF THE STRUCTURE - RESULT - FRONT WHEEL DRIVE - AND LOW AXLE WEIGHTS - RESULT - INDEPENDENT WHEEL SUSPENSION. THE FIAT 242 AND THE ALMOST IDENTICAL CITROEN C35 APPROACHED MOST CLOSELY TO THE THEORETICAL CONCEPT AND WERE SELECTED AS BASIC VEHICLES FOR THE PROTOTYPE. THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS FURTHER TECHNICAL NEEDS AND GIVES INFORMATION ON THE RESULTS OF DRIVING TESTS ON THE RTW EXPERIMENTAL ROAD, ON FINANCIAL PROBLEMS AND ON OTHER INFLUENCING FACTORS SUCH AS INTERNAL NOISE AND LONGITUDINAL DYNAMICS. THE PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 4TH RESCUE CONFERENCE OF THE GERMAN RED CROSS.
