SKID STUDIES AT THE AASHO ROAD TEST

A SERIES OF SIX STUDIES CONDUCTED PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE TRAFFIC TESTING PERIOD ON THE AASHO ROAD TEST OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELATE THE EFFECT OF A NUMBER OF VARIABLES ON SKIDDING RESISTANCE. THE DESIGN OF THE SKID RESISTANCE EXPERIMENT AND THE CONTROLLED FEATURES OF THE TEST ROAD MADE POSSIBLE THE ISOLATION OF THESE VARIABLES. VARIOUS PLOTS, DIAGRAMS AND CHARTS SHOW THE EFFECT ON THE COEFFICIENTS OF FRICTION OF NUMBER OF LOAD APPLICATIONS, MAGNITUDE OF LOAD, NUMBER AND SPACING OF AXLES, PAVEMENT DESIGN, AND SPEED OF THE TESTING EQUIPMENT.
