RIGID PAVEMENTS. MAINTENANCE. CONTRIBUTION OF RADIO-ACTIVE TRACERS TO THE FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF CEMENT GROUTS USED IN THE STABILIZATION OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT SLABS OR RUNWAYS

EXISTING CONCRETE PAVEMENTS CARRYING HEAVY TRAFFIC SUFFER SERIOUS DAMAGE LINKED WITH DETERIORATION IN THE SUBBASE. IN ORDER TO REMEDY THESE DISORDERS INJECTION IS USED TO IMPROVE THE SLAB/SUBBASE INTERFACE. UP TO NOW THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INJECTION OPERATIONS WAS ESTABLISHED ONLY BY MEANS OF EXTERNAL OBSERVATIONS SUCH AS RECORDING OF DETERIORATION AND MEASUREMENT OF SLAB PLAY BEFORE AND AFTER INJECTION. THE USE OF RADIOACTIVE TRACERS FACILITATES A MUCH FINER STUDY OF THE PROBLEM. FOLLOWING LABORATORY STUDIES IT WAS FOUND THAT IT WAS POSSIBLE TO USE TIN-INDIUM GENERATORS FOR DETECTING THE INJECTED GROUT THROUGH CONCRETE THICKNESSES OF 30 CM. IN SITU TESTS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO LOCATE THE DISORDERS AND, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, TO EVALUATE THE THICKNESS OF GROUT INJECTED UNDER THE SLAB. EXAMPLES OF THE TECHNIQUE ARE GIVEN. THIS METHOD ENABLES THE CONTRACTOR TO DETECT LOSSES OF GROUT IN THE SHOULDERS, EXCESSIVE SPREADING OF THE GROUT UNDER THE SLAB OR INADEQUATE FILLING OF CAVITIES.
