A FIELD STUDY OF TRANSVERSE CRACK DEVELOPMENT IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT AND TEST ROAD INSTRUMENTATION

THE INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE OF THE ST. ANNE TEST ROAD INSTRUMENTATION IS EVALUATED. A HISTORY OF TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN MANITOBA IS PRESENTED. THE TEST ROAD WAS COMPRISED OF TWENTY-NINE 400-FT. SECTIONS CONSTRUCTED ON CLAY AND SAND SUBGRADES. TWO DIFFERENT TYPES AND THREE GRADES OF BITUMEN, TWO ASPHALT AND FILLER CONTENTS TWO DIFFERENT AGGREGATES AND THREE DIFFERENT ROAD STRUCTURE DESIGNS WERE USED. THERMOCOUPLES WERE INSTALLED AND TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED AT HALF-HOURLY INTERVALS. ALSO INSTALLED WAS AN AUTOMATIC RECORDING SYSTEM TO DETECT THE INITIATION OF TRANSVERSE CRACKING. VISUAL CRACK SURVEYS WERE ALSO CARRIED OUT. EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED TO ILLUSTRATE THE UTILIZATION OF DATA OBTAINED, AND INDICATE COLD SPELLS AS THE AGENT RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSVERSE PAVEMENT CRACKING IN MANITOBA. /CGRA/RRL/
