PAVEMENT ROUGHNESS AND RUN-OFF CONDITIONS /IN FRENCH/

TO OBTAIN GOOD ADHESION ON WET ROADS, THE WATER OF THE TIRE CONTACT AREA MUST BE ELIMINATED. THIS IS DONE BY REDUCING THE THICKNESS OF THE WATER FILM WHEN IT IS RAINING BY PROVIDING ADEQUATE ROUGHNESS OF THE SURFACING AND SHARP EDGES ON THE CHIPPINGS. INVESTIGATIONS INTO SIMPLE RUN-OFF ARE DESCRIBED TO GAIN A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF RUN-OFF LAWS OF DIFFERENT PAVEMENT TEXTURES OBTAINED WITH VARIOUS MIX-DESIGNS, AND TO CARRY OUT OBSERVATIONS ON THE WEAR OF THE CHIPPINGS SHARP EDGES. EMPHASIS IS MADE ON THE NEED FOR A BETTER APPLICATION OF METHODS TO MEASURE PAVEMENT ROUGHNESS TO SPECIFIC CASES, AND FOR A RATIONAL SELECTION OF HIGHWAY DESIGNS AND MIX-DESIGNS OF THE SURFACING. /LCPC/A/RRL/
