SIMPLIFIED STERN BEARING INSPECTION

Turnbull Marine Design Co., of Sale, Cheshire, England, has introduced a stern bearing which meets the special requirements for a new generation of superships, enabling any part of a tailshaft bearing or gland seal to be examined ( and replaced if necessary ) while the ship is afloat and at loaded draft. The inboard end of the tailshaft has an integral solid forged coupling flange which is dimensioned to pass through the opening in the stern frame when the bearing has been removed. Using an inflatable gland seal from inside the vessel, it is possible to service or renew any part of the outboard gland seal from inside the vessel. The propeller is flange mounted and secured by hydraulically stressed bolts, thus eliminating the conventional taper mounting of the propeller. The procedure for dismantling and examining the bearing is given.
