THE AASHO ROAD TEST - PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE HELD MAY 16-18, 1962, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

THE TEST FACILITY AND THE AASHO ROAD TEST PAVEMENT EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED ARE FULLY PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. THE BEHAVIOR AND PERFORMANCE OF 18 SLAB AND BEAM BRIDGES UNDER REGULAR TEST TRAFFIC AND DURING ACCELERATED FATIGUE TESTS ARE DESCRIBED. ALSO REPORTED IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE BRIDGE BEAMS. FIELD TESTS AND LABORATORY TESTS ON THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE STEEL BRIDGES ARE COMPARED. TESTS TO FAILURE OF THE TEN TEST BRIDGES ARE DESCRIBED. THE BEHAVIOR DURING THE TEST AND UNDER FAILURE OF A NONCOMPOSITE STEEL BRIDGE, COMPOSITE STEEL BRIDGE, REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE, POST-TENSION PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE AND A PRETENSIONED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. COMPUTED ULTIMATE MOMENTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE MOMENTS PRODUCED BY THE TEST VEHICLES AND THE DEAD WEIGHT OF THE BRIDGES. THE TESTS YIELDED VALUABLE INFORMATION ON THE ACTUAL BEHAVIOR OF THE BRIDGES AND VEHICLES, AS WELL AS OF THE COMBINED BRIDGE-VEHICLE SYSTEM. THE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE SETTING INDICATED THAT THE LIFE OF A PAVEMENT WAS RELATED TO THE LEVEL OF PAVEMENT DEFLECTION AS MEASURED WITH BENKELMAN BEAM. TEST DATA ARE SUMMARIZED AND PRESENTED BY MEANS OF TABLES, GRAPHS, AND MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONS. THE EQUATIONS EXPRESS THE PAVEMENT DEFLECTION AS FUNCTIONS OF WHEEL LOAD, VEHICLE SPEED AND PAVEMENT TEMPERATURE. PAVEMENT ROUGHNESS MEASURING DEVICES ARE DISCUSSED. THE CHLOE PROFILOMOTER, A DEVICE DEVELOPED AT THE ROAD TEST FOR DETERMINATION OF THE SLOPE VARIANTS ON PAVEMENTS IN THE FIELD IS DESCRIBED. STUDIES ON THE STRUCTURAL DETERIORATION OF FLEXIBLE AND RIGID TEST PAVEMENTS ARE DESCRIBED. A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF THE STRAIN MEASUREMENTS TAKEN ON THE PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT AT THE AASHO ROAD TEST. THE LOAD STRESSES IN THE RIGID PAVEMENTS WERE HIGHLY CORRELATED WITH PERFORMANCE. RESULTS ARE REPORTED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF TREATED AND UNTREATED AGGREGATE BASES. APPLICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED OF ROAD TEST FORMULAS IN THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF PAVEMENT.
