GENERAL HIGHWAY MATTERS - SWITZERLAND

RESULTS OF THE AASHO HIGHWAY TEST FOR THE MEASUREMENTS OF DEFLECTION ARE APPLIED IN SWITZERLAND. TWO MACHINES FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF UNIFORMITY OF SURFACINGS OF DIFFERENT PRINCIPALS, WILL BE COMPARED WITH EACH OTHER. BY USING THE TWO MACHINES, A RELATIONSHIP LINKING THE RESULTS WILL BE SOUGHT ON THE BASIS OF MEASUREMENTS OF A NUMBER OF FLEXIBLE AND RIGID SURFACINGS. THE PROFILOMETER MEASURES THE SLOPE OF THE SURFACING CONTINUOUSLY IN RELATION TO A REFERENCE LEVEL, WHILE THE APPARATUS TRAVELS ALONG THE LENGTH. DISPERSAL OF THE ANGLE OF INCLINATION WILL BE CALCULATED AND WILL SERVE AS MEASUREMENT OF THE UNIFORMITY. DURING TRAVEL ON THE LENGTH, THE VIAGRAPH DRAWS A DIFFERENCE OF HEIGHT BETWEEN THE MEASURING WHEEL AND THE HORIZON WHICH WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE EIGHT GUIDE WHEELS. BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENCE OF THE METHODS DESCRIBED, THE CORRELATION OF THE VALUES OF MEASUREMENT OF THE TWO MACHINES ARE NOT VERY RIGOROUS. EQUATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE VALUE OF INCLINATION AND THE VALUE DERIVED FROM THE VIAGRAPH. OTHER EXPERIMENTS ARE NEEDED TO EXPLAIN THIS RELATIONSHIP MORE PRECISELY. THE MEASUREMENTS FOR DEFLECTION SHOW THAT THE VERTICAL DEFORMATION OF A HIGHWAY UNDER A LOAD CAN VERY WELL REPRESENT CHANGES OF VARYING CAPACITY AS A FUNCTION OF TIME AND OF SITE. THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF A HIGHWAY AS A FUNCTION OF THE EFFECT OF FREEZING AND THAWING APPEARS TO BE CONSIDERABLY ENLARGED. THE MEASUREMENTS OF DEFLECTION PERMIT DIRECT QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATION OF THE BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS MAKING UP THE HIGHWAY AS A FUNCTION OF THE CONDITIONS OF ENVIRONMENT.
