COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT METHODS FOR EVALUATING PAVEMENT CONDITIONS

ELEVATION POWER SPECTRA ARE CALCULATED FOR SECTIONS OF PAVEMENT FOR WHICH BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS ROUGHOMETER RATINGS ARE AVAILABLE, AND THESE RATINGS ARE COMPARED WITH A CRITERION OF PAVEMENT CONDITION BASED ON THE COMPUTED ELEVATION POWER SPECTRA. IN GENERAL, THE CRITERION OF PAVEMENT CONDITION DETERMINED FROM THE POWER SPECTRUM IS LESS RELIABLE THAN THE CRITERION OF CONDITION DETERMINED BY THE ROUGHOMETER. PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CALCULATION OF ELEVATION POWER SPECTRA FROM HIGHWAY ELEVATION MEASUREMENTS ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE EFFECTS OF TWO DIFFERENT METHODS FOR OBTAINING ELEVATION DEVIATIONS ARE SHOWN. THE USE OF A RUNNING MEAN FOR THIS PURPOSE IS SHOWN TO YIELD MORE SATISFACTORY RESULTS. POWER SPECTRA CALCULATED FROM DATA OBTAINED BY OTHER DEVICES USED TO DETERMINE HIGHWAY CONDITION ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THESE DEVICES GIVE GOOD RESULTS, ALTHOUGH INSUFFICIENT DATA ARE AVAILABLE TO FORM A VALID CONCLUSION RELATIVE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE DEVICES.
