TENTATIVE SKID-RESISTANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR MAIN RURAL HIGHWAYS

THE CURRENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE ON PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE IS REVIEWED AND THE CAUSES OF SLIPPERINESS, THE MECHANISM OF TIRE-ROAD FRICTION, AND ROAD FRICTION MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES ARE DISCUSSED. BASED ON A THOROUGH REVIEW AND EVALUATION OF PAST RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE, RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR MINIMUM TENTATIVE SKID-RESISTANCE VALUES. NEEDED RESEARCH IN THIS AREA IS DESCRIBED IN A COMPREHENSIVE MANNER. THE REPORT WILL BE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO PAVEMENT DESIGNERS, RESEARCH ENGINEERS, TIRE INDUSTRIES, HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATORS AND THOSE WITH SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY
