FIELD PERFORMANCE STUDIES OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN CANADA

THE PAPER ATTEMPTS TO SUMMARIZE THE RESULTS OF THE COOPERATIVE PAVEMENT INVESTIGATION PROGRAM IN CANADA WHICH HAVE BEEN ATTAINED SINCE THE CONFERENCE IN 1962. THE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE RATING SYSTEM USING A FIVE-MAN PANEL HAS PROVEN TO BE PRACTICAL, ECONOMICAL AND ACCURATE. EXTENSIVE REGRESSION ANALYSIS ON THE STAGE 1 INVENTORY DATA INDICATES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AGE AND STRENGTH ON PERFORMANCE. AMONG THE LESS SIGNIFICANT FACTORS ARE TRAFFIC AND SUBGRADE SOIL TYPES. THE REGRESSION EQUATIONS ARE MOST SIGNIFICANT AT AGES OF 6 TO 11 YEARS. EXTENSIVE DATA IS SHOWN FOR THE LOSS OF STRENGTH DURING THE SPRING FOR PAVEMENTS SUBJECT TO FROST ACTION. REGRESSION ANALYSES WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL IN PREDICTING THE LOSS OF STRENGTH. UNIFORM AND NON-UNIFORM PAVEMENTS ARE DESCRIBED, TOGETHER WITH DATA SHOWING THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND REDUCED PAVEMENT THICKNESSES THAT ARE ACHIEVED WITH UNIFORM PAVEMENTS. MINOR AREAS OF WEAKNESS WHICH ULTIMATELY SHOW DISTRESS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH NON-UNIFORM PAVEMENTS. A SUMMARY OF PAVEMENT THICKNESSES ACROSS CANADA IS PRESENTED FOR VARIOUS SOIL CLASSIFICATIONS. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS HAVE A MUCH STRONGER INFLUENCE THAN SUBGRADE SOIL TYPES IN DETERMINING PAVEMENT THICKNESS. A DESIGN METHOD FOR ESTABLISHING THICKNESS FOR NEW PAVEMENTS IS PRESENTED BASED ON STUDIES OF EXISTING PAVEMENTS IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT. CONSTRUCTION CONTROL PROCEDURES EMPLOYING THE BENKELMAN REBOUND TEST ARE OUTLINED AS BEING SUPPLEMEMTARY AND OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE TO DESIGN ITSELF. THE CONSTRUCTION CONTROL RELATES PRINCIPALLY TO ATTAINING UNIFORMITY RATHER THAN ADJUSTING PAVEMENT THICKNESS. /AUTHOR/
