USE OF VISCOELASTIC CONCEPTS TO EVALUATE LABORATOTY TEST RESULTS AND FIELD PERFORMANCE OF SOME MINNESOTA ASPHALT MIXTURES

FIFTY TEST SECTIONS HAVE BEEN STUDIED SINCE 1963 IN CONJUNCTION WITH AN INVESTIGATION SPONSORED BY THE MINNESOTA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT AND THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS. ROUTINE ASPHALT CEMENT AND MIXTURE TESTS AND A NUMBER OF STANDARD STRENGTH TESTS HAVE BEEN RUN ON SPECIMENS TAKEN FROM EACH PAVEMENT LAYER, PLUS THE EMBANKMENT. THE PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF THE SERVICEABILITY CONCEPT IS BEING OBSERVED AND THE TRAFFIC SINCE THE SECTION WAS BUILT HAS BEEN DETERMINED. THESE DATA HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE TO COMPARE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TEST SECTIONS TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST SECTIONS AND TO SEE IF A DESIGN PROCEDURE BASED ON THE CONCEPTS DEVELOPED AT THE ROAD TEST CAN BE USED TO DESIGN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN MINNESOTA. IT WAS FELT THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FIFTY TEST SECTIONS AND STUDY OF THEIR PERFORMANCE GAVE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO HOW SOME OF THE ELASTIC AND VISCOELASTIC CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS RELATED TO PERFORMANCE OF THE ASPHALT MIXTURES IN SERVICE. UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE ASPHALT INSTITUTE A REPEATED LOAD APPARATUS WAS BUILT. THIS DEVICE APPLIES A SINE WAVE LOADING TO A SPECIMEN AT VARIOUS FREQUENCIES. THE SPECIMENS CAN ALSO BE TESTED WITH A TRIAXIAL CONFINING PRESSURE APPLIED. THE TESTING PROGRAM HAS NOT BEEN CARRIED FAR ENOUGH TO MAKE ANY OVERALL FINAL CONCLUSIONS. FROM THE TESTING COMPLETED SO FAR THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS HAVE BEEN MADE' /1/ THE USE OF THE FOUR-ELEMENT VISCOELASTIC MODEL TO PREDICT RESPONSE TO A GIVEN LOADING CONDITION IS VALID, /2/ THE ASPHALT CEMENT PORTION OF THE MIXTURE PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART IN DETERMINING THE RESPONSE OF THE ASPHALT MIXTURE TO LOADING, /3/ THE REPEATED LOAD TEST DID DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN MIXTURES HAVING DIFFERENT ASPHALTS AND QUITE DIFFERENT AGGREGATE GRADATIONS, /4/ CHANGES IN ASPHALT CONTENT WITHIN GENERALLY USED RANGES DID NOT AFFECT THE VISCOELASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURES, /5/ A MEANS OF APPLYING LATERAL PRESSURE IS A NECESSARY PART OF THE TEST PROCEDURE ESPECIALLY FOR SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES, /6/ THE EFFECT OF LOAD HISTORY IS IMPORTANT, /7/ THE SLOPE OF THE STRAIN ENVELOPE MEASURES THE ABILITY OF THE MIXTURE TO WITHSTAND REPEATED LOADS, AND /8/ IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE DYNAMIC STIFFNESS AND THE CREEP SLOPE OF ASPHALT CORES FROM FIELD SECTIONS. /AUTHOR/
