HOT MIXED SAND ASPHALT BASES IN OKLAHOMA

THE FIRST HOT MIXED SAND ASPHALT /HMSA/ BASES IN OKLAHOMA WERE CONSTRUCTED IN 1958 ON I-40 IN THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE STATE. A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED WITH THIS MATERIAL, AND ITS USE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO VIRTUALLY ALL PARTS OF THE STATE UNTIL THERE HAVE BEEN ABOUT 300 TWO- LANE MILES OF HIGHWAYS CONSTRUCTED IN LESS THAN EIGHT YEARS. A PROGRAM OF TESTING WAS INITIATED IN 1962 TO EVALUATE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE HMSA BASES AFTER A PERIOD OF USE. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE COMPONENTS OF THE BASE /I.E., AGGREGATES AND ASPHALTIC CEMENT/, THE APPARENT EFFECT OF THE SURFACING, THE VARIATION IN THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ASPHALTIC CEMENT, AND LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. SEVEN AREAS, INCLUDING SIX DIFFERENT PROJECTS, HAVE BEEN TESTED FOR BASE QUALITIES. TWO AREAS ON DIFFERENT PROJECTS HAVE BEEN STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF SURFACE TREATMENTS AS OPPOSED TO HIGH TYPE SURFACING ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE RESIDUAL ASPHALT. OF PRIMARY INTEREST IS THE FACT THAT ALTHOUGH THESE BASES HAVE VOIDS RANGING FROM APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 PERCENT, VERY LITTLE CONSOLIDATION HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED. MOISTURE IN THE BASE DOES NOT APPEAR TO EXPLAIN ANY REDUCTION IN THE PENETRATION OR DUCTILITY OF THE ASPHALT CEMENT. THE RESULTS OF BENKELMAN BEAM AND PLATE BEARING TESTS INDICATE A HIGH BEARING CAPACITY. ONLY ONE AREA OF MINOR STRUCTURAL FAILURE HAS BEEN NOTED TO DATE. ALTHOUGH THE MATERIAL IS TENDER WHEN IT IS FIRST LAID, STRUCTURAL SUPPORT IS EVIDENCED GENERALLY WITHIN FOUR TO SIX WEEKS. TABLES ARE PRESENTED AS SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OF THESE FINDINGS. /AUTHOR/
