STE. ANNE TEST ROAD - A FIELD STUDY OF TRANSVERSE CRACK DEVELOPMENT IN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE MATERIAL AND UNIFORMITY OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE STE.ANNE TEST ROAD AND PRESENTS AND EVALUATION OF THE TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF THE TEST PAVEMENTS AFTER TWO WINTERS. THE OBSERVATIONS TO DATE SHOW THAT VEHICLE TRAFFIC, ASPHALT CONTENT, AND THE USE OF SMALL AMOUNTS OF ASPHALT FILLER ARE NOT SIGNIFICANT IN AFFECTING TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. THE TYPE OF SUBGRADE AND THE ROAD STRUCTURE DESIGN ASSUME IMPORTANCE IF ASPHALTS SUBJECT TO TRANSVERSE CRACKING ARE USED IN PAVEMENTS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES AFFECTING TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS ARE THE ASPHALT TYPE AND GRADE. PAVEMENTS INCORPORATING HIGH VISCOSITY TYPE ASPHALTS AND SOFTER GRADE ASPHALTS INDICATE A GREATER RESISTANCE TO TRANSVERSE CRACKING. /CGRA/
