LOW MODULUS PAVEMENT ON ELASTIC FOUNDATION

A MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF WESTERGAARDS THEORY FOR A PLATE ON A HEAVY LIQUID FOUNDATION AS IT APPLIES TO THE INVESTIGATION OF STRESSES AND DEFLECTIONS IN THE SURFACING LAYER OF A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT. IT IS INTENDED AS BACKGROUND MATERIAL FOR FUTURE RESEARCH WHICH WILL INCLUDE A TREATMENT OF ASPHALT PROPERTIES FOR VARIOUS TIME, TEMPERATURE AND LOADING CONDITIONS. A COMPUTER PROGRAMME GIVES A SOLUTION FOR THE SYMMETRICAL LOADING CASE. BENDING STRESSES, SHEAR STRESSES AND VERTICAL DEFLECTION ARE PLOTTED AGAINST PAVEMENT THICKNESS. BENDING AND SHEAR STRESSES DEPEND ON THE RATIO OF PAVEMENT STIFFNESS TO SUPPORT STIFFNESS BUT DEFLECTIONS DEPEND ON THE STIFFNESS RATIO AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SUPPORT REACTION. RELATIVELY THEIR BITUMEN-BOUND LAYERS DO LITTLE TO SPREAD THE LOAD BUT TRANSFER IT DIRECTLY TO THE SUPPORT LAYER WHERE LARGE VERTICAL DEFORMATIONS RESULT. VERY THICK BITUMEN-BOUND LAYERS BEHAVE SIMILARLY TO A SINGLE HOMOGENEOUS LAYER, STRESSES DEPEND ONLY ON LOAD AND THE PLATE THEORY NO LONGER APPLIES. IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES THE WESTERGAARD THEORY PROVIDES A USEFUL ANALYSIS AND PERMITS CALCULATION OF VERTICAL STRESS AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN AN ASPHALT COURSE AND ITS SUPPORT AND OF MAXIMUM VERTICAL SHEAR STRESS ACTING UNDER THE EDGE OF THE LOADED AREA. /RRL/
