A COMPARISON OF CALCULATED AND MEASURED DEFLECTIONS FOR THE AASHO TEST ROAD

TRIAXIAL TESTS ON TEST ROAD BASE, SUBBASE, AND SUBGRADE MATERIALS RESULTED IN VALUES WHICH COULD BE TRANSFORMED INTO THE FREQUENCY DOMAIN AND THE COMPLEX MODULUS AND PHASE SHIFT CALCULATED. THESE VALUES ARE SHOWN AS VARIABLES WITH MOISTURE AND DENSITY. SIMILAR DYNAMIC TESTS ON THE ASPHALT BINDER AND SURFACE COURSES AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES, FREQUENCY, AND STRESS AMPLITUDE PROVIDE DATA FOR GRAPHS OF THE MODULUS AND PHASE SHIFT VALUES PLOTTED AS FUNCTIONS OF TEMPERATURE AND FREQUENCY. USING MOISTURE, TEMPERATURE AND DENSITY MEASUREMENTS FOR THE TEST ROAD, VALUES WERE INTERPOLATED FROM THE LABORATORY TEST DATA AND USED IN THE SOLUTION OF THE DEFLECTION OF A THREE-LAYER ELASTIC SYSTEM. COMPARISON OF MEASURED AND CALCULATED DEFLECTIONS USING SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS ARE PRESENTED SHOWING THAT THE THREE-LAYER ELASTIC SOLUTION CAN BE USED TO ESTIMATE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DEFLECTIONS UNDER SINGLE AXLE DUAL WHEEL LOADINGS AT TEMPERATURES BELOW 75 DEGREES F. TO WHICH THE RESPONSE OF THE MATERIALS TO LOADING WAS FOUND TO BE ESSENTIALLY ELASTIC. /NAPA/
