COMPARISON OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT LOAD-STRESSES AT AASHO ROAD TEST WITH PREVIOUS WORK

EXISTING RIGID PAVEMENT DESIGN EQUATIONS SPRING PRIMARILY FROM THE THEORIES DEVELOPED BY WESTERGAARD IN 1925. SOME OF THESE DESIGN EQUATIONS ARE BASED ON EMPIRICAL MODIFICATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL THEORY, OTHERS ARE MERELY SIMPLIFICATIONS. SEVERAL OF THE EMPIRICAL MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FROM STRAIN MEASUREMENTS TAKEN UNDER STATIC LOADS. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT ALLOW MORE ACCURATE DYNAMIC STRAIN MEASUREMENT THAN WAS FORMERLY POSSIBLE. SUCH EQUIPMENT WAS USED TO MAKE APPROXIMATELY 100,000 INDIVIDUAL STRAIN GAGE READINGS UNDER DYNAMIC LOADS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE AASHO ROAD TEST /1958 TO 1966/ THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO DISCUSS THESE STRAIN MEASUREMENTS AND TO COMPARE THEM WITH THE STATIC STRAIN MEASUREMENTS USED TO DEVELOP EXISTING EMPIRICAL DESIGN EQUATIONS. THE STRESSES CALCULATED FROM THESE STRAINS WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE ORIGINAL WESTERGAARD THEORIES. SUCH COMPARISONS COULD PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR MODIFYING EMPIRICAL DESIGN EQUATIONS TO INCLUDE A DYNAMIC LOAD EFFECT. /AUTHOR/
