USE OF PAVEMENT CONDITION DATA TO PREDICT VEHICLE BEHAVIOR
THE INTERACTION OF THE PAVEMENT AND THE VEHICLE IS DISCUSSED. PAVEMENT CONDITION AFFECTS THE RIDE OF A VEHICLE, STRESSES IN THE VEHICLE STRUCTURE, AND MAY PRODUCE CARGO DAMAGE. VEHICLE PERFORMANCE CAN BE USED AS A CRITERION OF PAVEMENT CONDITION. VEHICLES CAN ALSO PRODUCE LARGE FORCES ON THE PAVEMENT, EVEN WHEN THE PAVEMENT SURFACE DOES NOT CONTAIN SHARP DISCONTINUITIES SUCH AS FAULTS AND POTHOLES. SMOOTH UNDULATIONS IN THE HIGHWAY CAN RESULT IN LARGE FORCES BETWEEN HIGHWAY AND VEHICLE UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. AT PURDUE, EXPERIMENTALLY DETERMINED VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS HAVE BEEN COMBINED WITH STATISTICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF PAVEMENTS /ELEVATION POWER SPECTRA/ TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL ESTIMATES OF THE FORCES /FORCE POWER SPECTRA/ PRODUCED BY THE VEHICLE. COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE FORCES HAS SHOWN THE PREDICTIONS TO BE HIGH. THE INVESTIGATION ALSO INCLUDES MEASUREMENT AND PREDICTION OF STRESSES AND DEFLECTIONS IN THE PAVEMENT RESULTING FROM THESE DYNAMIC VEHICLE LOADS. DYNAMIC LOADS MAY BE OBTAINED FROM CONTINUOUS RECORDS OF TIRE PRESSURE. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE ROUGHER THE PAVEMENT THE LARGER THE FORCE USUALLY PRODUCED ON THE HIGHWAY BY THE VEHICLE, THUS PAVEMENT CONDITION INFLUENCES THE FORCES TO WHICH THE PAVEMENT IS EXPOSED, WITH THE RESULTING IMPLICATIONS FOR PAVEMENT SERVICE LIFE. IT WAS THEREFORE CONCLUDED THAT APPROPRIATE PAVEMENT CONDITION DATA CAN BE USED TO ESTIMATE THE EFFECT OF THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL AS THE EFFECT OF THE HIGHWAY ON THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A PRESSING NEED FOR A FAST CHEAP WAY OF ACCURATELY MEASURING THE PAVEMENT CHARACTERISTICS WHICH INFLUENCE THE BEHAVIOR OF A VEHICLE.
