MEASUREMENTS FOR DETERMINING FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONDITION

BEFORE SELECTING THE MEASUREMENTS TO MAKE FOR FINDING A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS CONDITION, THE PURPOSE OF THE SURVEY MUST BE DECIDED AND THE PAVEMENT USAGE MUST BE CONSIDERED. THE PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX /PSI/ METHOD IS BASED ON THE RIDING QUALITY OF A PAVEMENT. ADJUSTMENT FACTORS ARE REQUIRED WHEN USING THE PSI METHOD ON CITY STREETS. SECONDARY ROADS AND AIRPORTS. PRESENT SERVICEABILITY MAY TELL THE ENGINEER THAT THE SURFACE IS ROUGH AND RESURFACING IS REQUIRED, BUT A STRUCTURAL CONDITION SURVEY IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT STRUCTURAL REPAIRS ARE REQUIRED, AND THE CAUSES OF THE OBSERVED PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE. IN THIS TYPE OF SURVEY CRACKING, DISINTEGRATION AND DISTORTION ARE MEASURED. IN A DETAILED CONDITION SURVEY OF A PAVEMENT STRUCTURE, DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS SHOULD BE MADE TO DETERMINE THE PAVEMENTS STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY. IT MAY ALSO BE NECESSARY TO EXAMINE THE ADEQUACY OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. ANOTHER DEFECT WHICH IS OFTEN MEASURED IS THE SKIDDING HAZARD. IT AFFECTS NEITHER RIDABILITY NOR THE STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY OF THE PAVEMENT BUT MAY BE BAD ENOUGH TO REQUIRE RESURFACING.
