VARIABLES IN THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE RUNWAYS OF AIRPORTS

VARIABLES ARE STUDIED IN 3 AREAS: (1) STATIC LOAD VARIABLES, THE EFFECTS OF UNCERTAINTIES IN STATIC LOAD FAR FROM ANY EDGE ON COMPUTED STRESSES, DEFLECTIONS, AND SUBGRADE REACTIONS; (2) LOAD VARIABLES, INFLATION PRESSURE OF THE TIRE, SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE LOADED AREA, AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE INTENSITY OF PRESSURE OVER THE AREA; AND (3) RUNWAY AND SUBGRADE VARIABLES, THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AND POISSON'S RATIO OF THE RUNWAY MATERIAL, RUNWAY THICKNESS, THE MODULUS OF THE SUBGRADE REACTION, AND HARD OR SOFT SPOTS IN THE SUBGRADE.
