WHEEL LOAD AND IMPACT IN PAVEMENT DESIGN

ALTHOUGH THE MAGNITUDES OF BOTH STATIC AND IMPACT FORCES ARE FAIRLY WELL KNOWN, THE STRESS CONDITIONS PRODUCED BY THE FORCES ARE NOT YET FULLY UNDERSTOOD. THE STRESSES CAUSED BY STATIC LOADS ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE OF MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS. WESTERGAARD'S METHOD OF THEORETICAL ANALYSIS IS SUGGESTED AS THE BEST MEANS FOR DETERMINING THICKNESS OF PAVEMENT SLABS. THE ONLY WAY KNOWN AT PRESENT FOR TAKING ACCOUNT OF IMPACT STRESSES IS BY FIRST REDUCING THEM TO STATIC EQUIVALENTS.
