DESIGN OF EMULSIFIED ASPHALT TREATED BASES

AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED THAT COMBINES CURRENT AND ESTABLISHED MIX DESIGN AND THICKNESS DESIGN METHODS WITH LAYERED SYSTEM ANALYSIS FOR DESIGN OF EMULSIFIED ASPHALT TREATED BASES. A FIELD SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF IN-SERVICE PROJECTS CONSTRUCTED WITH ASPHALT EMULSION TREATED BASES TO: (1) OBTAIN UNDISTURBED SAMPLES OF STABILIZED BASE FOR LABORATORY TESTING, AND (2) OBSERVE THE PERFORMANCE OF PAVEMENTS CONSTRUCTED WITH EMULSION TREATED BASES UNDER A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTS. OBJECTIVES WERE TO: (1) DESCRIBE RESULTS OF FIELD CONDITION SURVEYS OF PAVEMENTS CONSTRUCTED WITH EMULSION STABILIZED BASES, (2) EXPLORE POSSIBLE USES OF LAYERED ELASTIC THEORY FOR THICKNESS DESIGN, (3) STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF CURING TIME ON PERFORMANCE, AND (4) PRESENT A METHOD FOR MIX DESIGN ADEQUATE TO RESIST DEFORMATION. CONDITION SURVEY RESULTS SHOW THAT EMULSION STABLIZED BASES ARE PROVIDING SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE UNDER A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTS AND LOADING CONDITIONS. BY COMBINING THEORETICAL CONCEPTS WITH THE EXISTING DESIGN METHODS OF THE ASPHALT INSTITUTE, A PROCEDURE WAS FOUND THAT APPEARS TO PROVIDE A REASONABLE APPROACH FOR THE DESIGN OF EMULSION STABILIZED BASES. A NOMOGRAPH IS PRESENTED WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO ESTIMATE THE RESILIENT MODULUS OF THE STABILIZED BASE WITHOUT RESORTING TO COMPLICATED LABORATORY TESTS INVOLVING CARRYING PROCEDURES. MIX DESIGN AND MATERIAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO PREVENT PERMANENT DEFORMATION UNDERLOAD ARE PRESENTED. THESE PROCEDURES ARE BASED ON WELL- ESTABLISHED METHODS FOR EVALUATING THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF MIXES.
