THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE FOR HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS

AN EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE SLAB WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO OBTAIN THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR THE ADOPTION OF THE USE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE IN HIGHWAY AND AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS. PRESTRESSING METHODS ARE DISCUSSED. FRICTION REDUCING METHODS WERE STUDIED AND LOADING TESTS CONDUCTED. THE THREE FRICTION REDUCING DEVICES USED WERE: (1) ONE-INCH SAND COVERED WITH ONE LAYER OF BUILDING PAPER, (2) TWO LAYERS OF BUILDING PAPER, AND (3) TWO LAYERS OF COPPER-CLAD SISALKRAFT PAPER, THE COPPER SIDES FACING AND POWDERED SOAPSTONE BETWEEN THEM. THE SAND AND PAPER LAYERS SEEM TO BE ECONOMICAL AND SATISFACTORY FOR REDUCING BASE FRICTION. THE TEST INCIDATED THE OVER-ALL SUPERIOR BEHAVIOR OF THE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE SLAB. THE EFFECT OF REPEATED PRESTRESSING IN SHORT CYCLES PROVED BENEFICIAL. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT PRESTRESSING CAN BE DEVELOPED IN THE MOST EFFICIENT MANNER WHEN THE CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING VOLUMETRIC CHANGES IN THE CONCRETE HAVE A DECREASING TENDENCY. LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY TESTS SHOWED THAT THE SOIL COULD HAVE RESISTED EXTREMELY HIGH LOADS. THE ADDED COMPRESSIVE ENERGY IN THE CONCRETE PROVIDED BY PRESTRESSING, COUPLED WITH ITS SPRING EFFECT WOULD MAKE CONSIDERABLE REDUCTION IN PAVEMENT THICKNESS POSSIBLE. LOAD TESTS PERFORMED AT THE SHRINKAGE CRACKS AND AT THE EDGES ALSO PROVED BENEFICIAL.
