AN EXPERIMENT IN PAVEMENT SLAB DESIGN

A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES WERE INTRODUCED IN A PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT ON A REGULARLY SCHEDULED CONSTRUCTION PROJECT BY THE ILLINOIS DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS IN 1952. INCLUDED IN THE EXPERIMENTAL PORTION OF THE PROJECT WERE SECTIONS ON NONREINFORCED PAVEMENT WITH AND WITHOUT TRANSVERSE JOINTS, AND REINFORCED SECTIONS HAVING THE ILLINOIS DISTRIBUTED STEEL REINFORCEMENT WITH A VARIETY OF TRANSVERSE JOINTS AND JOINT TREATMENTS. ALTHOUGH THE PAVEMENT IS STILL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, CERTAIN EARLY BEHAVIOR TRENDS ARE NOW INDICATED. /AUTHOR/
