FATIGUE CONSIDERATIONS IN THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

DESIGN OF AN ASPHALT PAVEMENT REQUIRES THAT THICKNESS SELECTION OF THE STRUCTURE AND OF ITS COMPONENTS BE ADEQUATE TO INSURE THAT A NUMBER OF FORMS OF DISTRESS BE MINIMIZED DURING THE EXPECTED LIFE OF THE STRUCTURE. ONE OF THE FORMS OF PAVEMENT DISTRESS WHICH HAS RECEIVED INCREASED RESEARCH EMPHASIS IN RECENT YEARS IS THE RUPTURE OF THE ASPHALT BOUND LAYER DUE TO REPETITIVE TRAFFIC LOADING HEREIN TERMED FATIGUE CRACKING. A SUB SYSTEM HAS BEEN PROPOSED TO CONSIDER THE FATIGUE MODE OF DISTRESS. THE PURPOSES OF THIS PAPER ARE TO DISCUSS CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THIS SUBSYSTEM AND INCLUDE (1) A SUMMARY OF RESEARCH CONCERNED WITH THE FATIGUE RESPONSE OF ASPHALT MIXTURES; (2) THE APPLICABILITY OF SUCH RESEARCH TO THE PREDICTION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF AN IN-SERVICE PAVEMENT IN CALIFORNIA AND (3) A BRIEF COMMENT ON THE APPLICATION OF SUCH RESEARCH TO THE DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS IN CANADA. /CGRA/RRL/
