STRESSES IN LAYERED SYSTEMS UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING
EXISTING METHODS ARE OUTLINED OF THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS LEADING UP TO A BRIEF HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF ELASTIC LAYERED SYSTEMS. A FINITE ELEMENT APPROACH IS PRESENTED TO THIS PROBLEM AND SALIENT POINTS INVOLVED ARE TREATED IN DETAIL. THE FINITE ELEMENT OF ANALYSIS HOPES TO: (1) PRODUCE OFF-AXIS RESULTS FOR STRESS, STRAIN AND DEFLECTION FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF PARAMETERS, AND (2) EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF RIGID INCLUSIONS ALONG THE VERTICAL AXIS OF THE LOAD. EXPERIMENTAL WORK IS DESCRIBED INVOLVED IN THE DETERMINATION OF AXIAL STRESSES IN TWO-LAYER AND THREE-LAYER SYSTEMS, VERTICALLY BELOW THE CENTRAL AXIS OF A CIRCULAR LOAD. THE MEASUREMENTS INVOLVE A CONTINUOUS RECORD OF SURFACE DISPLACEMENT AND APPLIED LOAD AND THE DETERMINATION OF ELASTIC LAYER VALUES. LOADS ARE APPLIED STATICALLY AND DYNAMICALLY. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE STRUCTURE IS RESPONDING ELASTICALLY OVER THE GREATER PART OF THE RANGE AND IN THE CASE OF RAPID-RELEASE LOADS THERE IS A RANGE OF ELASTIC BEHAVIOR. THE APPLICATION OF AN ASPHALT SURFACING PRODUCES A MORE ELASTIC BEHAVIOR. THE ELASTIC THEORY GIVES A REASONABLE PREDICTION OF VERTICAL, AXIAL, STRESS DISTRIBUTION FOR BURNT COLLIERY SHALE AND SAND AT A PARTICULAR VALUE OF STATIC LOADING. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ASPHALT SURFACING IS GREATLY SUPERIOR TO THAT OF THE TAR-MACADAM, BOTH FATIGUE-WISE AND IN ITS LOAD-DISTRIBUTING PROPERTIES. VERTICAL, AXIAL, STRESSES INCREASE UNDER ASPHALT WITH INCREASING APPLICATIONS OF LOAD WHILE THEY REMAIN APPROXIMATELY CONSTANT UNDER TAR MACADAM UP TO THE POINT OF ARBITRARY FAILURE.
