RIGID PAVEMENTS - GERMANY

A SUB-BASE OF A THICKNESS OF 8-15 CM CONSISTING OF BITUMEN, TAR OR CEMENT STABILIZED GRAVEL, IN ORDER TO SPREAD AND ABSORB THE DYNAMIC LOADS BY A LARGER MASS AND TO PROTECT THE SUB-SOIL AGAINST EROSION, IMPROVES THE SUB-SOIL UNDER CONCRETE ROADS WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. TEST ROAD SECTIONS IN GERMANY PROVED THAT THE STRENGTH OF STEEL-REINFORCED SLABS DEPENDS ON THE DISTANCE OF THE CONTRACTION JOINTS. AN ELASTICALLY COUPLED CHAIN OF SLABS WITH CONTINUOUS REINFORCEMENT AND WITH DOWEL-TUBES IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE JOINTS, WHICH ENCLOSE THE LONGITUDINAL WIRES, IS TO BE TESTED. SUCH A ROAD SURFACE WITH THE THICKNESS OF APPROXIMATELY 16 CM, COULD BE RECOMMENDED FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF DETERIORATING OLD CONCRETE ROADS. THE CORRECT DISTANCE BETWEEN JOINTS DEPENDS ON WEATHER CONDITIONS AND THE TEMPERATURE OF THE FRESH CONCRETE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE QUALITY OF SEALING COMPOUNDS MUST BE IMPROVED AND THEIR PROPERTIES ADAPTED TO EXPECTED JOINT MOVEMENTS. THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF SEALING COMPOUND CAN BE REDUCED BY THE USE OF PLASTIC RIGID INSERTS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE JOINT SLOT. AT LARGE BUILDING SITES, THE CONCRETE IS MAINLY PREPARED IN STATIONARY, OFTEN AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED MIXERS AND SUBSEQUENTLY LAID WITH SPREADERS AND PAVERS. THE SLIP-FORM PAVER WILL BE USED EXTENSIVELY FOR THE BUILDING OF A MAJOR GERMAN ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE END OF 1966. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS IN CONCRETE SLABS ARE BEING CONDUCTED TO PERMIT AN INSIGHT IN THE VALUE OF CONVEX STRESSES AND MOVEMENTS IN THE JOINTS. ANNUAL EXTREME VALUES OF TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TOP AND BASE OF A SLAB AND THE AVERAGE SLAB TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN DETERMINED IN RELATION TO CLIMATIC CONDITIONS. PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN USED IN ROAD BUILDING TO ANY EXTENT BECAUSE OF HIGH COST. INTERNALLY PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS (PRESTRESSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS) HAVE BEEN BUILT IN GREAT NUMBERS AND WITH GREAT SUCCESS ON AIRFIELDS. TESTS CONFIRM SALT DEICER RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENTS WITH AN AIR-PORE CONTENT OF AT LEAST 3.5 PERCENT. IMPREGNATION WITH LINSEED OIL OR EXTREMELY THIN COATINGS OF EPOXY HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL IN PROTECTING OLD CONCRETE ROADS (WITHOUT THIS AIR-PORE CONTENT) AGAINST DEICERS.
