DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS - U.S.S.R

METHODS IN THE USSR FOR SELECTING THE DESIGN OF NON-RIGID FLEXIBLE CLOSED PAVEMENTS WHICH ARE BASED ON CONSIDERING THE PAVEMENT AS CONSISTING OF A NUMBER OF LAYERS WHOSE RIGIDITY DECREASES TOWARDS THE BOTTOM, AND WHICH BEHAVE UNDER THE ACTION OF THE HEAVIEST VEHICLES IN THE ELASTIC STAGE ARE DESCRIBED. THREE METHODS ARE DISCUSSED: A METHOD OF SELECTING THE PAVEMENT THICKNESS BASED ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE CRITICAL DEFLECTION IN SPRING AND THE TRAFFIC DENSITY, A METHOD OF DETERMINING THE THICKNESS OF THE SEPARATE LAYERS OF THE BASIS OF A SCHEME WITH VALUES OF THE MODULII OF ELASTICITY SMOOTHLY DECREASING WITH DEPTH, AND A METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE PAVEMENT THICKNESS ON THE CONDITION THAT THERE ARISE NO PLASTIC STRAINS IN ANY ELEMENT OF STRUCTURE. IN ALL METHODS THE SURFACE LAYER AND THE MONOLITHIC BASE COURSES ARE CHECKED FOR FLEXURAL STRENGTH STRENGTH, WITH THE COUNT TAKEN OF FATIGUE INDUCED BY REPEATED LOADS. THE EXPEDIENCY OF EMPLOYING ONE OF THESE METHODS IS DETERMINED BY PRACTICE. IN ADDITION, METHODS ARE DESCRIBED FOR MEASURING DEFLECTIONS UNDER THE WHEELS OF A STANDARD VEHICLE. THE OPERATING QUALITIES OF HIGHWAYS ARE THE RESULTS OF THE WHOLE COMPLEX OF ALL OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE ROAD AND, AS A RULE, CANNOT BE ACHIEVED ONLY AT THE EXPENSE OF CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS, NO MATTER HOW PERFECT THESE WILL BE. METHODS OF DETERMINING THE SMOOTHNESS AND ROUGHNESS OF ROAD SURFACES AND THE REQUIREMENTS WHICH THEY MEET FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF TRAFFIC SAFETY AND DRIVING CONVENIENCE ARE DISCUSSED. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE SIMPLEST METHOD IS ACCOMPANIED BY SUBSTANTIATION OF THE USE FOR THESE PURPOSES OF ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS AND ANALOG COMPUTERS. THE OPERATING QUALITIES OF ROUGH PAVEMENTS ARE BEING IMPROVED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: (1) BY EMPLOYING FINE AND MEDIUM-SIZED CRUSHED STONE (NOT OVER 15 MM) FOR PROVIDING A ROUGH SURFACE, (2) BY USING AN AGGREGATE THAT TOGETHER WITH THE BASIC HIGH-STRENGTH CRYSTALLINE MATERIALS CONTAINS UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED INCLUSIONS OF WEAKER MINERALS IN QUANTITIES THAT DO NOT AFFECT THE OVERALL STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL, AND (3) BY ADDING CRUSHED STONE OF COARSE SAND MADE FROM ESPECIALLY HARD ROCK TO THE COMPOSITION OF THE ASPHALT CONCRETE MIX.
