DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS - FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

THEORETICAL RESEARCH ON CONCRETE ROADS SHOWS THAT THE TEMPERATURE STRESSES, WHICH ARE MORE SEVERE THAN THE STRESSES INDUCED BY LOADING AT THE CENTER OF THE SLAB, CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED BY SHORTENING THE INTERVAL BETWEEN THE TRANSVERSE JOINTS TO 4 1/2 TO 6 METERS. THE COMPUTATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS MAKE USE OF A NEW DYNAMIC MODULUS WHICH IS DEPENDENT FIRSTLY ON TEMPERATURE, THEN ON THE DURATION OF LOADING AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THE INDUCED STRESS. DETAILS OF THE INSTRUMENTS EMPLOYED AND DIAGRAMS SHOWING THE RESULTS OF TESTS ARE GIVEN. THE STRESSES AND STRAINS WITHIN A MULTI-LAYERED SYSTEM IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE AXIS OF LOADING HAVE BEEN CALCULATED FOR THE TWO CONDITIONS PRESENTED BY VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOADING. IT WILL BE SEEN THAT THE UNIT LOAD ON THE SUB-GRADE IS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME FOR A BASE LAYER OF DRY STONES AS FOR A BASE LAYER OF COATED STONES HAVING HALF THE THICKNESS. THE RESULTS OF THE AASHO TRIALS HAVE CONFIRMED THE RECOMMENDATIONS IN FORCE IN GERMANY. THE GOVERNMENT HAS STANDARDIZED THE CLASSIFICATION OF THE ROAD NETWORK. THE ROADS ARE DIVIDED INTO FIVE CATEGORIES ACCORDING TO THE INTENSITY OF TRAFFIC AND THERE ARE FIVE CORRESPONDING STANDARDS OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. THE RESISTANCE TO DAMAGE BY FROST REMAINS A CRUCIAL FEATURE OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE AND NEW RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE BEEN PROPOSED. ENGINEERS ARE ALSO CONCERNED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR THE REINFORCEMENT OF ROADS SUBJECTED TO INCREASING TRAFFIC OR DAMAGED BY FROST. /AUTHOR/
