NUCLEAR MEASUREMENT OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT DENSITIES

THERE IS A NEED FOR A NEW DEVICE WHICH WOULD DETERMINE WITH PRECISION AND RAPIDITY THE DENSITY OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS. THE MEASURE OF ACCURACY OF THE NUCLEAR DENSITY GAUGES OFFERED ON THE MARKET IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE, AND COULD HAVE PRACTICABLE APPLICATIONS TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS IN THE PROVINCE. THE QUESTION IS WHETHER THE ORDINARY VARIABLES SUCH AS TYPE OF AGGREGATE, SURFACE TEXTURE AND TEMPERATURE WOULD GIVE COMPARABLE RESULTS USING THE NUCLEAR DENSITY GAUGE AND THE CONVENTIONAL CORE METHOD. THE ANALYSIS OF THE DATA GATHERED MIGHT INDICATE THAT ONE CALIBRATION CURVE IS ENOUGH AND WOULD APPLY IN ALL CASES. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE EQUIPMENT ON HAND COULD BE ACCEPTED AS SUCH, AND ONLY ITS ACCURACY IN THE FIELD NEEDS TO BE ASCERTAINED. EVEN THOUGH THE RESULTS WITH THE NUCLEAR DENSITY EQUIPMENT ARE NOT AS ACCURATE AS THOSE OBTAINED BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS, THE FACT THAT MANY MORE TESTS CAN BE PERFORMED WITH THE NUCLEAR EQUIPMENT SHOULD LEAD TO MORE UNIFORM CONTROL OF COMPACTION. IF A TOLERANCE OF PLUS OR MINUS 2% WITH A DEGREE OF CONFIDENCE OF 95% IS ACCEPTED, THE DENSITY MEASURED WITH THE NUCLEAR EQUIPMENT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR MOST CONDITIONS. THE ONLY EXCEPTION WOULD BE FOR A PAVEMENT HAVING AN OPEN SURFACE WHERE THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE NUCLEAR EQUIPMENT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WITH THE PRESENT METHOD USED. /CGRA/
