FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN BASED ON THE ELEMENT METHOD OF ANALYSIS - PART 1

THE OBJECT OF THIS WORK IS TO PRESENT A PRACTICAL FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN METHOD, BASED ON SOIL MECHANICS PRINCIPLES AND THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE AND SUBGRADE. THE NECESSARY GRANULAR PAVEMENT THICKNESS IS DETERMINED OVER A PURELY COHESIVE SUBGRADE TO CARRY A GIVEN STATIC VEHICLE OR AIRCRAFT LOADING. THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS OF THE PAVEMENT AND THE SUBGRADE ARE MEASURED ON REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES IN THE LABORATOTY, IN THEIR DESIGN CONDITION USING WELL ACCEPTED TESTING PROCEDURES IN THE CIVIL ENGINEERING PRACTICE /QUICK, UNDRAINED, TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TEST/. THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHICAL FORM /DESIGN CHARTS/ TOGETHER WITH EXAMPLES OF DESIGNS FOR VARIOUS LOADING CONDITIONS. /NAPA/
