DEFINITION OF COMPOSITE PAVEMENT STRUCTURES

A DEFINITION WAS PREPARED FOR A COMPOSITE PAVEMENT. COMPOSITE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE IS DEFINED AS A STRUCTURE COMPRISING MULTIPLE, STRUCTURALLY SIGNIFICANT, LAYERS OF DIFFERENT, SOMETIMES HETEROGENEOUS COMPOSITION. TWO LAYERS OR MORE MUST EMPLOY DISSIMILAR, MANUFACTURED BINDING AGENTS. SURFACE TREATMENTS, THIN OVERLAYS, MEMBRANES, LAMINA, AND THE LIKE HAVE NO SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL STRENGTH AND THUS NOT CONSIDERED LAYERS IN ARRIVING AT A TYPE OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. THIS DEFINITION WAS ANALYZED BY A STUDY OF STANDARD DEFINITIONS OF TECHNICAL TERMS.
