FERTILIZERS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO ROADSIDES

THE COSTS OF CONSTRUCTING CULVERTS, STREAM CHANNELS, AND DIVERSION DITCHES MAY BE DOUBLED BY SOIL EROSION. GROUND COVER IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT EROSION, BUT MANY GRASSES NEED FERTILIZERS FOR QUICK ESTABLISHMENT BECAUSE OF POOR SOIL CONDITIONS OR A CERTAIN DEGREE OF INCOMPATIBILITY BETWEEN THE SOIL AND THE COVER SELECTED. THE THREE MOST COMMONLY NEEDED ELEMENTS ARE POTASSIUM, NITROGEN, AND PHOSPHORUS. LIME MAY ALSO BE NECESSARY FOR ACID SOILS, ITS CALCIUM ACTING AS A FOURTH MAJOR NUTRIENT.
