SLOPE STABILIZATION OF WEST VIRGINIA TURNPIKE

MULCHING AND SEEDING OPERATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. IN SOME CASES AREAS OF APPROXIMATELY 60 FEET ACROSS AND 230 FEET FROM THE MULCH BLOWER WERE COVERED BY USE OF 8-INCH ALUMINUM IRRIGATION PIPE IN 10- AND 20-FOOT LENGTHS. THE FLUFFED-STRAW MULCH WAS TIED DOWN BY ASPHALT EMULSION. SEEDING COVERAGE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 300 FEET BY USING 2.5-INCH FIRE HOSE FOR THE FIRST 100 FEET AND 1.5-INCH FOR THE SECOND 100. AN INNOVATION WAS MADE IN FERTILIZATION THAT PRODUCED GOOD STANDS AND RESULTED IN COST SAVINGS: EXPERIMENTATION REVEALED THAT A 500-LB SPREAD OF 10-10-10 PER ACRE WAS SUPERIOR TO 1-1-1 AND 12-12-12. SIX SEEDS WERE USED IN THE GRASS MIXTURE FOR CUT AND FILL SLOPES. SUCCESSFUL GROWTH HAS BEEN THE RULE IN SPITE OF NOT FERTILIZING SUBSEQUENT TO SEEDING.
