ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SEWAGE SLUDGE AS A MULCHING MATERIAL

SEWAGE SLUDGE WAS USED AS A MULCHING MATERIAL BY THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. AFTER THE INITIAL APPLICATION, VEGETATION IN THE TREATED AREAS WAS INSPECTED. SLUDGE WORKED WELL AS A SOIL CONDITIONER BUT HAS LITTLE VALUE AS A LIGHT TOP-DRESSING FOR TURF AREAS. ALTHOUGH SEWAGE SLUDGE IS LOW IN COST, IT WAS REJECTED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS' /1/ PLANTS GROWING IN THE MULCH WERE TOO EXPENSIVE TO ELIMINATE, /2/ THE EXCESSIVE ASH IN THE SLUDGE IS DELETERIOUS WHEN USED AS MULCH, /3/ THE ODOR IS OBNOXIOUS RESULTING IN ADVERSE PUBLIC OPINION.
