LOCAL SCOUR IN BEDS OF SANDS AND GRAVEL DOWNSTREAM FROM A SOLID APRON

THE BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR MODEL DATA TO BE SCALED INTO CORRESPONDING VALUES IN ITS PROTOTYPE, IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF HOW SIMILAR ARE THE PROCESSES IN BOTH SYSTEMS. THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION WAS AIMED AT EXTENDING KNOWLEDGE OF THE PERFORMANCE OF SYSTEMS WHERE SCOURING OCCURRED IN AN ERODABLE BED OF NON-COHESIVE SOLID PARTICLES DOWNSTREAM FROM A HYDRAULIC STRUCTURE; THE PARTICULAR CASE STUDIED WAS THAT WHERE THE ERODABLE BED WAS DOWNSTREAM FROM A SOLID HORIZONTAL APRON IN A RECTANGULAR CHANNEL. OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE OF SCOUR PROFILE DEVELOPMENT IN SAND, AND IN A NUMBER OF GRAVELS WITH PARTICLE SIZES RANGING BETWEEN 1/50 IN. AND 3/4 IN.; TESTS WERE MADE WITH EACH MATERIAL ACTED UPON BY VARIOUS WATER FLOWS WITH STREAM VELOCITIES UP TO 7 FT. PER SEC. THE MAIN FINDINGS WERE: (1) SCOUR DEVELOPMENT PROGRESSED FROM "SHEET" SCOURING TO "POTHOLE" SCOURING; (2) THERE WAS A GENERAL SIMILARITY OF "POTHOLE" SCOUR PROFILES IN ALL MATERIALS, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE SLIGHT BUT NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCES; AND (3) THE CHANGE OF THE MAXIMUM SCOUR DEPTH D WITH TIME T, FOLLOWED A FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP IN WHICH D IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE LOG OF TIME.
