DEMONSTRATION OF POSSIBLE FLOW CONDITIONS IN A CULVERT

A PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD IS PRESENTED OF MANY OF THE FLOW PROFILES IN A HIGHWAY CULVERT USING A TWO-DIMENSIONAL MODEL WITH SIDEWALLS OF CLEAR PLASTIC. THE FLOW PROFILES WERE PHOTOGRAPHED, CLASSIFIED BY THE POSITION OF THE CONTROL SECTION AND ANALYZED. THE EFFECTS OF ENTRANCE STREAMLINING, BARREL LENGTH AND ROUGHNESS, AND OUTLET SUBMERGENCE ARE READILY VISUALIZED. THE OUTLET CONDITIONS WERE VARIED FROM THAT OF A FREE OUTLET TO THAT OF A COMPLETELY SUBMERGED OUTLET. THE FACTORS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES WHICH MUST BE CONSIDERED TO DETERMINE THE HEADWATER ELEVATION WHERE TABULATED. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE INLET IS ILLUSTRATED BY COMPARING UNSTREAMLINED AND STREAMLINED INLETS. TABULAR INFORMATION IS PRESENTED DELINEATING THE CONDITIONS FOR WHICH A GIVEN PROFILE COULD EXIST.
