TRANSITION CURVES AND ALIGNMENT GEOMETRY PROBLEMS

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MATHEMATICAL PROCEDURES FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF CLOTHOID TRANSITION CURVES AND THEIR APPLICATION TO A NUMBER OF HIGHWAY ALIGNMENT GEOMETRY PROBLEMS. A SINGLE MATHEMATICAL PROCEDURE IS DEVELOPED FOR BOTH SIMPLE AND COMPOUND TRANSITION CURVES BY TAKING A COMPOUND TRANSITION AS THE GENERAL CASE, AND A SIMPLE TRANSITION AS A PARTICULAR CASE IN WHICH THE CURVE AT ONE END HAS DEGENERATED INTO A STRAIGHT LINE. THIS NEW PROCEDURE GIVES SIMPLE TRANSITIONS WHICH ARE IDENTICAL WITH THOSE OBTAINED USING ACCEPTED PROCEDURES, AND COMPOUND TRANSITIONS WHICH ELIMINATE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN ACCEPTED PROCEDURES AND THEORETICAL CHARACTERISTICS. BY PROPER APPLICATION OF A CONSISTENT SIGN CONVENTION IT IS FOUND THAT A SINGLE SET OF FORMULAE MAY BE APPLIED TO CURVES WHICH ARE TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AND WITH INCREASING OR DECREASING CURVATURE. THREE APPLICATIONS ARE DESCRIBED DEALING WITH ALIGNMENT GEOMETRY PROBLEMS IN WHICH IT IS NECESSARY TO FIND THE PROPERTIES OF INTERMEDIATE POINTS ON AN ALIGNMENT. IN EACH APPLICATION A GENERAL PROBLEM IS DEVELOPED IN WHICH THE ALIGNMENT MAY CONSIST OF ANY COMBINATION OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS - TRANSITION CURVES, CIRCULAR CURVES AND TANGENTS. /AUTHOR/
